Palworld v1.0.4 patch notes: two new missions and reworked fishing

Palworld v1.0.4 landed on the morning of September 7. The notes run past a hundred lines this time — I read them end to end and translated them. Where 1.0.3 was about balance and numbers, this patch is about content and about the small things that had been grating for a while.

The headline: two new side missions — Beyond Dimensions and From the Far Side of the Moon. The first is accepted from an NPC at Fisherman's Point in Mount Obsidian, the second opens up after you clear it. Beyond the missions there are three big changes: Pals now prioritise their stronger skills in combat, fishing was reworked from spot difficulty to on-screen guidance, and several passive skills that never delivered their stated effect were fixed.

One line stood out: the in-game Palpedia got name search. A plain search field over a list of three hundred Pals — that should have worked from launch day, not two months later.

The short version

  • Two new side missions: Beyond Dimensions from an NPC at Fisherman's Point in Mount Obsidian, and From the Far Side of the Moon, which opens after you clear it.
  • Summoned and base Pals now favour the skills expected to deal more damage instead of whatever fits first.
  • Fishing was reworked: spot difficulty in Sunreach and the World Tree area, per-bait catch amounts, control guides and recommended gear shown while fishing, and a new world setting for fish behaviour.
  • Player-built Campfires no longer set the player or their Pals on fire.
  • Cancelling work at a production facility returns materials to your inventory instead of dumping them on the ground.
  • Fixed passive skills that delivered nothing: Lucky was not adding defense, Idiosyncratic never activated, and Mercy Hit did not apply to a Pal's attacks while ridden.
  • Ancient Bark can now be gathered by Pals with Gathering Lv. 1.
  • Pal Critics, the NPCs who reward you for showing them a specific Pal: Sakurajima now wants Dogen instead of Selyne, Sunreach wants Faleris Aqua instead of Bastigor.
  • The default FPS cap on PC is now 120, alongside a separate block of performance work.
  • Server admins get a per-player building limit — until now the limit only counted per base.
  • Selling multiple items at a shop no longer miscalculates the total.

What it means in practice

Two new missions, and where to pick them up

The only genuinely new content in the patch is a pair of side missions. Beyond Dimensions is accepted from an NPC at Fisherman's Point in Mount Obsidian, and From the Far Side of the Moon unlocks once you finish it. The patch notes give you the names and the entry point and nothing else, but the game data shows more. The first mission is a scouting run: explore a mysterious islet, clear the dungeon inside it, report back. The second leads to Moon Lord: craft a Celestial Sigil, bring it to a Summoning Altar at your base and beat whatever turns up. It pays 100,000 Gold and 35,490 EXP — exactly twice what the first one gives (30,000 Gold and 17,745 EXP).

Pals now prioritise their strong skills

The most useful combat line in the patch: summoned and base Pals now prioritise the skills expected to deal more damage. Before this, a Pal could spend the whole fight hammering away with a weak attack while a strong one sat ready — the choice was close to random. Base Pals using charging-type skills got their behaviour fixed too, and so did backstepping: Power Bomb now has a minimum use distance so your Pal stops hopping backwards three times before firing it, and backstep behaviour was adjusted for summoned Pals on some skills. One small line that used to ruin hunts: Pals and NPCs marked as mission targets no longer fall asleep. Who hits with what is in the skills list.

What "adjusted" actually means

Two lines in the notes are deliberately vague, and there are hard numbers behind them. "Adjusted the homing enhancement value from Lunaris Effigies" is a 2.5x nerf: ranks 1 through 4 used to give 25/50/75/100, now they give 10/20/30/40. Sphere homing works for anyone who throws spheres at all, so this lands harder than it reads. "Adjusted Lapure's swimming speed" also went down, and further: from 600 to 180, or 210 while dashing. Lapure is not a mount, so this is about how it behaves in water — swimming away from you just got a lot harder.

Fishing was reworked

Fishing took more changes than any other system. Spot difficulty in Sunreach and the World Tree area was retuned, and the number of items you get from a successful catch was changed per bait type. On-screen guidance was added while fishing: control guides, warning displays and a recommended-equipment display — until now you had to guess what to fish this pond with and whether your rod was up to it. World Settings gained a fish-behaviour option for the fishing minigame, so the difficulty of the minigame itself is now configurable and can be softened on your own server. On the fix side: the reward display no longer shows the same item type in several slots, and volcanic spots stopped handing out Pals that were never meant to be caught there.

Campfires stop setting their owner on fire

A Campfire you built yourself no longer sets fire to you, your summoned Pal or your base workers. Formally it is one line in the building section; in practice it ends a familiar scene where you cook a meal, take half a step sideways and go up in flames along with the cook.

Cancelling work no longer dumps materials at your feet

Two inventory changes, both in your favour. Cancel work at a production facility and the returned materials go back into your inventory instead of onto the ground. Cancel construction or a dismantle with the option not to auto-pick-up items over the weight limit enabled, and only the excess lands at your feet — the rest still goes into your bag. That option used to cost overloaded players whole stacks of materials, especially during mass dismantles. What to build and what it costs is in the base planner.

The passives that were not working

This is a list of things that simply did not fire. The defense bonus from Lucky was not applying at all. The Idiosyncratic mutation passive did not activate. Mercy Hit was not applied to a Pal's attacks while you were riding it — which is exactly the case people take it for. Killamari Primo had its Partner Skill Lv. 2 and Lv. 3 effects swapped. And the one that stings most for breeders: the mutated eggs added by Grintale's passive did not reflect mutated stat values — the mutation happened, the stat gain did not. If you were running breeding for mutants, part of that work was going nowhere before 1.0.4. The reverse case was cleaned up too: Mercy Hit could be shown in the UI even when its conditions were not met. The full list with descriptions is on the passives page.

Pal Critics: changed Pals

A Pal Critic is an NPC who asks to be shown a particular Pal and hands out a reward for it. Two of them changed their request: Sakurajima now wants Dogen instead of Selyne, and Sunreach wants Faleris Aqua instead of Bastigor. So if you were keeping a Pal in your Palbox for the old request, or were on your way to catch one, you need a different one now. Where each one lives is on the map.

Softlocks and small lines that fix big annoyances

Two unpleasant progression cases are closed. First: defeating Panthalus before the Main Mission led you to him meant the World Tree Guardian simply never appeared later on. Second: the Main Mission about crafting an axe and a pickaxe would not progress if you already owned or had equipped one before accepting it — a trap for anyone on a second run who does things before being asked.

Then the small stuff that still matters. An unlocked Watchtower whose surrounding map stayed unexplored will now unlock that map when you use it again. The Echoing Flute can finally be dropped from your inventory. Ancient Bark is gathered by Pals with Gathering Lv. 1 instead of a higher level, which means almost any worker will do. Selling several items at a shop no longer miscalculates the total, and item counts stopped lying while moving things around. Radiant Gems from wild Pals in the World Tree area no longer come with mismatched or heavily biased elements. And one small pleasure: items dropped from gathering objects no longer sink into the ground, while treasure chests and the Oil Rig picked up proper sounds and effects.

Servers: a per-player building limit and new no-build zones

Admins got a setting that was overdue: a limit on how many buildings a single player can place in the world. Until now the cap only counted per base, so one person could cover half the map just by spreading several bases. You can put a config together in the settings generator. Separately, when building restrictions are enabled in server settings, new no-build areas were added: around the desert Field Boss Suzaku, around the desert Main Mission cave, and at some mission locations in Sakurajima. That is an answer to an old trick — drop a base on top of a spawn point and switch it off.

Performance and stability

Optimisation gets its own block: reduced load from some rendering processes, from foliage display and from effect playback, less stuttering when certain passive skills activate, and lighter field rendering in the World Tree area. The default FPS cap on PC was also raised to 120, so if you never opened the graphics settings your frame ceiling just went up on its own. Seven crashes and lockups are closed: NPC dialogue overlapping with riding, the animation after a fishing spot disappears, an over-long mission description, sorting Pals on a server, plus two cases where controls stopped responding — after being returned to the title screen by a connection error, and when switching maps with a custom marker placed. And a Pal recalled immediately after being summoned will come back out again. One nice detail for server owners: a version mismatch error now tells you the version of what you are connecting to.
